[Ep02] How Game of Thrones' characters look in the show vs how they look in the books

8. Ramsay Bolton
Artwork on the right © LynxSphinx,
Who?
The bastard son of Roose Bolton, Ramsay somehow manages to outdo even Joffrey’s sadism and depravity — particularly where poor Theon Greyjoy is concerned.
Played by? Iwan Rheon
What should he look like?
Even when he is dressed in splendour, Ramsay is an ugly man. Big-boned with sloped shoulders. He is described as having a pink and blotchy skin, a broad nose, small mouth and long dark hair. He has his father’s eyes — small, close-set and pale.
How accurate is the show?
Like a lot of the characters in the TV show, Iwan Rheon isn’t as ugly as Ramsay in the books.
9.Jaime Lannister
Artwork on the right © Vesea,
Who?
Dashing knight and son of Tywin Lannister. He’s also father and uncle to the offspring of his twin sister, Cerise (it’s complicated). Jaime is an incomparably skilled fighter and the youngest person to be appointed to the kingsguard (royal security guards), and he is known as the Kingslayer ever since he assassinated the Mad King Aerys Targaryen.
Played by?
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
What should he look like?
Jaime has all of the classic Lannister traits — golden hair, green eyes and incredibly handsome.
How accurate is the show?
Pretty accurate, Nikolaj Caster-Waldau has all the physical traits Jaimes is described as having. However, in the books after he Catelyn Stark releases him from imprisonment, Jaime shaves his head so that his golden locks won’t be recognised on his journey back to King’s Landing.
10. Sansa Stark
Artwork on the right © ReneAigner
Who?
The eldest daughter of Catelyn and Ned Stark.
Played by? Sophie Turner
What should she look like?
According to George RR Martin’s text, Sansa takes after her mother with blue eyes and thick auburn hair. She is traditionally beautiful, tall and graceful.
How accurate is the show?
The casting of Sophie Turner is spot on, and she almost exactly matches the description in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.
11. Barristan Selmy
Artwork on the left © capprotti.
Who?
AKA Barristan the Bold is a knight who begins events in A Song of Ice and Fire as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard of Robert Baratheon. Once the despotic Joffrey comes to power, poor old Barristan is sacked and decides to sail across the Narrow Sea to offer his services to Daenerys Targaryen.
Played by?  Ian McElhinney
What should he look like?
In the books, Barristan looks every inch the knight with his tall, strong stature and blue eyes. He has white hair and a few wrinkles, but that comes with the pressure of guarding monarchs. When he first meets Daenerys, Barristan has long hair and a beard, which he eventually shaves to take years off his face.
How accurate is the show? Pretty accurate, although he lacks the long white hair and beard that he is supposed to have when first meeting Dany.
12.Bran Stark
Artwork on the left © lokiescape
Who? The second youngest child of Ned Stark and Catelyn Tully who has a psychic connection to his direwolf. After he accidentally spies Jaime and Cersei doing the dirty, Bran suffers a mysterious fall from a tower which leaves him paralysed from the waist down — forcing him to give up any dream of knighthood.
Played by? Isaac Hempstead-Wright
What should he look like? In George RR Martin’s text, Bran takes after the Tully side of his family with auburn hair and blue eyes.
How accurate is the show?
In the show, all of the Starks apart from Sansa seem to have the Stark’s darker features — so TV Bran doesn’t really look anything like his literary counterpart.
13.Ygritte
Artwork on the right © mattolsonart,
Who?
Jon Snow’s wildling lover. Ygritte is a formidable archer with attitude who inspires Jon to forsake his vows — albeit temporarily. Best known for telling Jon Snow he knows nothing.
Played by?
Rose Leslie
What should she look like?
According to George RR Martin’s canon, Ygritte is short for her age, with a skinny yet muscular build. She has a round face, pug nose, eyes that are too far apart and crooked teeth — safe to say, she isn’t conventionally pretty but Jon finds her beautiful (aww). She has wild red hair, which her people consider lucky.
How accurate is the show?
Well, Rose Leslie is much too pretty for our liking — and we’re not really sure how she’s managed to maintain such perfect teeth north of wall. The hair colour is spot-on though, even if a little too well-brushed.
14.Tyrion Lannister
Artwork on the right © jorgruber
Who?
The youngest son of Tywin Lannister, rejected by his father for his dwarfism. Tyrion proved an adept administrator but has since had to flee Westeros after being accused of murdering his nephew Joffrey.
Played by? Peter Dinklage
What should he look like?
It’s constantly asserted in the books that dwarf Tyrion isn’t exactly a looker, especially when compared to his beautiful, golden-haired siblings. Tyrion is described as having mismatched eyes, one green and one black, and lank hair which is a mixture of pale blonde and black.
After the battle of Blackwater in A Storm of Swords, his appearance is further hampered by some pretty nasty battle scars.
How accurate is the show?
Peter Dinklage was born with achondroplasia, a common form of dwarfism, and at 4 ft 5 in has a similar build to the Tyrion of the books. The blonde hair also isn’t too far off the mark, but in the show Tyrion’s eyes are the same colour — green.
His battle scars are depicted to some extent, but they are relatively unobtrusive compared to the books — his nose is intact and the scar across his face is smaller. In all fairness, a missing nose every episode would be one hell of job for the make up department.
15.Melisandre
Artwork on the left © jezebel.
Who?
Sultry seductress and priestess of the Lord of Light. She famously gave birth to a shadow baby (fathered by Stannis Baratheon) which killed Stannis’s brother and rival to the throne, Renly.
Played by? Carice van Houten
What should she look like?
Melisandre uses her beauty to win people over, with pale skin and long, copper hair. She has a voluptuous figure and narrow waist — never seen without her red and gold choker, which is set with a ruby.
How accurate is the show?
Carice van Houten is the living embodiment of Melisandre, right down to the copper hair, heart-shaped face and propensity for disrobing. It’s almost impossible to fault her portrayal.
16.Littlefinger
Artwork on the right by Britt Martin, © Green Ronin
Who?
Peter “Littlefinger” Baelish is the friendly but machiavellian Master of Coin, and foremost employer of Westerosi sex workers. He’s pulling more strings in the Seven Kingdoms than his compatriots often realise. He harboured an unrequited love for his childhood friend Catelyn Tully.
Played by? Aidan Gillen
What should he look like?
Littlefinger gets his name from his short stature. He has sharp features, dark hair with flecks of grey, and a small pointed beard.
How accurate is the show?
Pretty accurate, right down to the pointy little beard.
